Christmas is coming soon. It's a wonderful time of year, when families are together. They cook, they eat, they open presents. And, sometimes, somewhere at home, there is a radio playing. For the music industry, it's a chance to reach people with songs and music that are part of the Christmas spirit. So, which song is going to be this year's most popular song at Christmas? Will it be Bruno Mars singing “Just the way you are“? Or Thomas D and his million voices? Or will someone new come along, someone who maybe nobody has heard of before, but whose song touches us this Christmas?
In England, that person is a young woman called Ellie Goulding, and her version of “Your Song“ will be playing in homes throughout Britain this Christmas. The reason no one has heard of Ellie Goulding before is because she's just an ordinary 23-year-old girl from an ordinary family who went to an ordinary school and then to an ordinary university and who hasn't won a TV talent competition. The only un-ordinary thing about her is her voice.
“Your Song“ was originally written by another British musician who you might have heard of: Elton John. He wrote “Your Song“ long before Ellie Goulding was even born! A mix of folk and jazz, it was written for someone who has “the sweetest eyes I've ever seen“. At the beginning of the song, Ellie sings: “It's a little bit funny, this feeling inside / I'm not one of those who can easily hide.“ Ellie Goulding's soft, warm voice is perfect for the feeling of the song. “I don't have much money, but boy if I did / I'd buy a big house where we both could live.“ People like this song a lot because it's about love. In the chorus, Ellie sings: “And you can tell everybody, this is your song ... I hope you don't mind that I put down in words / how wonderful life is now you're in the world.“ These words really do describe the Christmas spirit. Christmas is a time to be with the people you love and to be thankful. It is a time to say “how wonderful life is now you're in the world...“
