For the past few weeks the news has been full of it. It's been talked about on all the nightly chat shows, discussed in newspapers and schools. Integration. Has Germany done enough to help its immigrants integrate into German society? What makes Germany society today? Are people who move to Germany from other countries automatically ghettoised? Why do so many immigrants not speak German? It's a debate with hundreds of questions and no easy answer. But while many people choose to look at the negative examples, there are always lots of positive examples, too. The German band, Monrose, is one of them.
Three young women from three different towns in Germany, all with an immigrant background. Bahar Kızıl's parents come from Antalya in Turkey, Senna Guemmour is of Moroccan descent, and Mandy Capristo has Italian roots. The three girls were born in Freiburg, Frankfurt and Mannheim, and just to make Monrose really multi-cultural, they sing in English.
Their most recent song, “This Is Me“, is a song about a woman recovering from the end of a love affair. At the beginning of the song, the young woman is “lying on the floor, staring at the door“, waiting - or hoping - that her lover will come back, “tears falling down“ her face. Amazingly, she's “been lying here for days, soaking up the pain“. But then the girl decides it's time to stop feeling sad: “So I move my feet up off the ground, get myself in the shower, wash you off.“
“This Is Me“ is a song about being a strong individual. As Mandy Capristo sings: “I'm too strong to fail / This is me, and I will not be invisible / Tonight I'm starting again.“ It's a song that says you can always be in control of your life. Like the three Monrose girls from Hessen and Baden-Württemberg, in Germany nobody should ever feel like they're invisible. There are opportunities for everyone here, whoever you are. Monrose is living proof of that.
