Aktuelle Hits zu verstehen ist oft nicht ganz leicht. Gut, wenn ein Engländer erklärt, worum es dabei eigentlich geht. David Fermer erzählt auf englisch diesmal - über „The Flood“ von Take That. Fürs Hörverständnis mit Audio.
More than twenty years ago, a British music manager called Nigel Martin-Smith decided to form a boy band in England that could mirror the success of a US band called New Kids on the Block who were taking America by storm. He started auditions in Manchester, in North England, and soon found five young men who seemed to fit together. The youngest member of the newly-formed band was a 16-year-old boy called Robbie Williams.
Take That went on to become one of the biggest new bands in the world, enjoying massive success with their 1995 song “Back for Good“ which was Number One in 31 countries. But while at the zenith of their success, the band began to fall apart. Robbie Williams left only a year later, and when the other four band members also announced they would be separating, young women all around the UK were so sad that the government set up a telephone hotline to help them.
Last year, Robbie Williams, the only band member to have enjoyed a successful solo career, announced he was returning to Take That. The first song on their new album is called “The Flood“ and its lyrics read like a history of the band. Twenty years ago, at the start of their musical career, the five young men from Manchester were “standing on the edge of forever / at the start of whatever / shouting love at the World.“ They were “like cavemen“ who met “the moon and the stars“.
Then the band fell apart and no one ever thought they would come back together again. As the five men sing together in the chorus: “They said we'd never dance again.“ But Take That proved them wrong. “Although no one understood / we were holding back the flood / learning how to dance the rain / There's progress now / where once was none.“ Let's hope that progress lasts and the band will stay together and enjoy happier times.
