To some people, New Zealand is „on the other side of the world“. To people living there, we are on the other side of the world. Perhaps because of this distance , many people know very little about the small island nation next to Australia. If someone asks you to name a famous person from New Zealand, it might take you a while before you can come up with one. Most people think of standard clichés: lots of sheep, a rugby team called The All Blacks, and the tattooed faces of the Maori tradition.
What New Zealand definitely isn't famous for is its music. A young lady from the capital city of Wellington is now out to change that. On her website, Brooke Fraser talks about “the power of music as a language“. She goes on to say, “I've been given the gift of speaking a particular dialect of this language and I don't have the option of being silent.“ And she hasn't been. Ever since discovering this talent while playing the piano as a little girl, she's been making music. Now her songs have travelled beyond the beautiful coastline of her home country and are making her famous all over the world.
„Something in the Water“ is about a girl who wears „bright pretty things“ with „birds singing on my shoulder (in harmony it seems)“. And how they sing! „Something in the Water“ is a country-pop song that makes anyone feel good. The girl in the song has „got a halo made of summer, rhythms made of spring“, and she's wearing a „crown of words ... each one a song to sing.“
Ironically, „Something in the Water“ is not a typical Brooke Fraser song. Its high energy, feel-good lyrics stand in stark contrast to some of her previous songs such as “Albertine“ about a girl from Rwanda. After having spent time in Africa, Fraser does a lot of charity work. On her 27th birthday, she started a campaign asking her fans to donate 27 dollars to build clean wells in Ethiopia. She raised $54,000 and now wants to continue such water projects. If Brooke Fraser continues to write international hits like “Something in the Water“, then maybe one day that something in the water won't just be about “making me love you“, but could also mean clean drinking water for many more Africans.
