08.02.2012 · Aktuelle Hits zu verstehen ist oft nicht ganz leicht. Gut, wenn ein Engländer erklärt, worum es dabei eigentlich geht. David Fermer erzählt auf englisch diesmal über „Somebody That I Used to Know“ von Gotye. Fürs Hörverständnis mit Audio.
Separations are nearly always painful. Two people, who used to love each other, go their separate ways. Whether young or old, it always hurts - at least, for a while. That’s why separations are something singers all over the world like to sing about.
Of course, not all separations are bad. Some couples stay friends afterwards. They treat each other with respect and are nice to each other - maybe even nicer than before! But then there are bad separations in which couples fight and call each other names.
The separation which Australian singer, Gotye, sings about in his song „Somebody That I Used to Know“ is somewhere between the two. It’s a separation that the couple wanted (“I’ll admit I was glad it was over“), but it doesn’t end with them becoming friends. It ends with them becoming strangers. Gotye begins his song with positive memories. „Now and then I think of when we were together“, he sings. „Like when you said you felt so happy you could die.“
But already at the end of the first verse, the listener can tell not everything was as good as it should have been. „I told myself that you were right for me / But felt so lonely in your company.“ To feel lonely in the company of the person you love is definitely not a good sign! And so the couple separated.
But it wasn’t until after the separation that Gotye began to feel unhappy. „You didn’t have to cut me off / Make out like it never happened and that we were nothing.“ He wanted to stay friends. But that was no longer possible. His ex-girlfriend even changed her number. „You treat me like a stranger / and that feels so rough.“ Two people, once in love, suddenly strangers. Not a nice end to the story. And „now you’re just somebody that I used to know“.
