In South London, in a place called Croydon, a very special school opened twenty years ago: the BRIT School. From the very beginning, the BRIT school has had a special goal: to give an education to teenagers between the age of 14 and 19 not in normal school subjects but in the Arts and Entertainment. Theatre, Music, Dance, Communication are the core subjects here, not Maths, History or Chemistry.

The BRIT school has already produced some big names. Leona Lewis went to school there. So did Katie Melua, Amy Winehouse and Kate Nash. And in 2006, an 18-year-old girl called Adele Adkins graduated from the school. Only three years later, Adele was the winner of two American Grammys for Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. This month, her latest song, “Rolling In The Deep“, is at the top of the charts all around the world. The now 22-year-old Adele will surely be winning more prizes in 2011.

“Rolling In The Deep“ is a powerful soul song with gospel roots. The essence of the song, however, is not sung by Adele, but by the female background singers who come in during the chorus: “You're going to wish you never had met me,“ they prophecy in a whisper. “Tears are going to fall“. As Adele says on her website, she was inspired to write the song when her boyfriend left her. She was angry. Very angry. Her song is about revenge. “There's a fire starting in my heart / reaching fever pitch, and it's bringing me out of the dark ... Finally I can see you crystal clear.“ Adele seems to think things between them were good. “We almost had it all,“ she sings, again and again. “You had my heart inside of your hands.“ But now all Adele has are “the scars of your love“. Those scars were the inspiration to write one of the best songs this year. Hopefully they won't heal too quickly, and many more songs will come from the talented Adele.
