He is known as „The King of R&B“. He has been making music since his first album in 1994. He's one of the most successful recording artists of all time. He is famous in his home country of America and across the world. He owns restaurants and businesses, and even a professional basketball team: The Cleveland Cavaliers. And, like many people, Usher wants more.
That's also what Usher Terrence Raymond IV, as he was originally known, thinks his fans want from him. More. Which is why he released his sixth studio album last year. One of the songs from this album is now in the German charts. „More“ is Usher's hymn to his own success, a mantra of his personal magnetism. In it he gives away one of his trade secrets: „I create the feeling that keeps them coming back“, he sings, and it seems he is right. With sales of over 65 million records worldwide, the numbers speak for themselves. The key to Usher's success is actually nothing new. For centuries leading figures in history have used similar styles of propaganda to guarantee their position: tell the people what they want, tell them when they're getting it, and afterwards, tell them how good it was. This is also what Usher does in the chorus to „More“: „If you really want more, scream it out louder / Get it on the floor, bring out the fire / And light it up, take it higher / Gonna push it to the limit, give it more!“
Like many successful recording artists, Usher started young. He sang in the church choir of his home town, Chattanooga, in Tennessee. His mother was so convinced of her son's singing talents, the family moved to the big city of Atlanta, Georgia, just to help his career. His mother also wanted more. Her plan worked. At the age of 11, Usher joined a local R&B band, his mother became his agent, and a few years later, his first album was on the market. The question is: for how long?
