"It's dark in a cold December / but I've got you to keep me warm / and if you're broken I will mend you / and keep you sheltered from the storm ..." With these words the latest exciting new musical talent to come out of Britain has been keeping people's hearts warm throughout this winter. 20-year-old Ed Sheeran from England became famous when he released his 2011 song "The A-Team" as a digital download without any promotion or a label and reached Number 2 in the British iTunes charts. "The A-Team" was also popular here in Germany, but Ed's new song "Lego House" is sure to win him many more German fans.
Ed Sheeran grew up with music, listening to songs in his parents' car as they drove around the country. He gave his first musical performance at the age of 11, at a school concert in front of a few hundred people, and since then he's never stopped. The soft-speaking Londoner, with his friendly face and red hair, describes himself as "driven" meaning he always knew what he wanted to do (music) and did everything he could to make it come true. There was no plan B. His parents supported him, although they wanted him to go to university after school not to London where he spent two years playing mini-concerts to audiences with as few as five people. Ten years after that first school concert, Ed Sheeran is now a star.
"I'm gonna pick up the pieces / and build a lego house / if things go wrong we can knock it down ..." A song about love? A song about friendship? Maybe. Maybe not. Seeing the music video with "Harry Potter"-star Rupert Grint, alias Ron Weasley, playing an obsessive fan gives the chorus a whole new meaning: "I'm out of touch, I'm out of love / I'll pick you up when you're getting down / and out of all these things I've done / I think I love you better now." Like all good songs, it's up to the listener to decide.
