Aktuelle Hits verstehen: „Fight for This Love“ von Cheryl Cole

It has been done so many times before: A singer enjoys success as a member of a boy or girl band, and then goes on to start a solo career. Robbie Williams did it with Take That, Beyoncé did it after Destiny's Child, and now Cheryl Cole has done it, moving on from the group, Girls Aloud, to produce her first solo album. The first two lines of Cheryl Cole's new hit song, “Fight For This Love“, might even give the reason for making this step: “Too much of anything can make you sick / Even the good can be a curse.“
But, as the title of her song says, in “Fight For This Love“ Cheryl Cole isn't talking about music or success, but love. And at the age of 26, Cheryl knows a thing or two about this subject. In addition to being beautiful and a good singer, love is one of the things that have made Cheryl famous - at least in her home country of England. Born by the name Tweedy, Cheryl only became Cheryl Cole after marrying the England and Chelsea footballer, Ashley Cole. Ashley Cole began his football career as a 19-year-old for the London club, Arsenal, and went on to play for England, where he is now a regular. When Cheryl and Ashley got married in 2006, they were a dream couple. But in February of this year, the “dream couple“ separated. It is therefore slightly ironic that Cheryl's new song, “Fight For This Love“, came out in England only months before the separation was announced.
In her R&B pop song, Cheryl sings: “Anything that is worth having / is sure enough worth fighting for / Quitting is out of the question / When it gets tough, (you've) got to fight some more.“ Obviously her message didn't get through to her husband, but then “love ain't no walk in the park / everyday ain't gonna be no picnic.“ For Cheryl Cole, winner of the British talent show, “Popstars“, member of the girl band Girls Aloud, and now solo artist and beloved jury member of the X-Factor, there is a lot “worth fighting for“. It will be interesting to see whether she makes the step from British celebrity to international star, from girl group member to solo artist, and whether her next love - whoever it may be - will become “a place that she can call home“.
