The big question at the heart of Justin Bieber's hit R&B song “Baby“ is: “Are we an item?“ The word “item“ is another word for couple. In other words: “Are we together?“ In his song, Justin is absolutely sure about his girlfriend's feelings: “You know you love me, I know you care“, “you want my love, you want my heart“. But his girlfriend doesn't seem to be too sure herself. Justin “just can't believe we ain't together“ and is tired of her playing “we're just friends“.
Today it is hard to imagine there is a teenage girl in the entire world who wouldn't want to be together with the 16-year-old singing sensation from Canada. But there was a time when Justin Bieber wasn't quite so famous. Justin made his first appearance on stage at the age of twelve, back in the days when he was living with his mum in Ontario, Canada. Like many other children, he sang in a local singing competition. Ironically, he didn't even win. But his mother filmed his performance and uploaded it onto YouTube. It was the start of something that would end in worldwide fame only a few years later.
YouTube was where it all started for Justin, and where a lot still happens for him today. “Baby“ isn't only his most successful song, it is also the third most watched video in YouTube history. Because of YouTube, Justin Bieber is often called “the people's star“, because he is not a product of American Idol or the Disney Channel. The people chose him. By the time Bieber's YouTube videos were accidentally discovered by an American music producer, Justin already had millions of hits.
But even stars have problems, and in “Baby“ Justin has a broken heart. “I wanna play it cool, but I'm losing you“, he sings. “I'm in pieces, baby fix me / and just shake me till you wake me from this bad dream.“ Of course, “Baby“ is only a song and not an autobiography. Who will really become Justin's first love is still an open question. But one thing is for sure: At least for the next few years, Justin is going to get lots and lots of offers.
