The most famous rappers in the world come from America. They have names like 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg and Eminem, as well as women like Missy Elliot and Queen Latifah. But ask anyone if they know a rapper from that other major music-producing country, Britain, and you'll get a look of confusion. British rappers?!? Is there such a thing?

Well, there is. And one of them is called Plan B. In reality, Plan B's name is Ben Drew, and he comes from East London. When Plan B started rapping after leaving school, no one was interested in him. In America, Eminem found it difficult enough to get recognition as a white rapper in a largely black scene. And as a white English boy, Plan B found it even more difficult. So after recording his first hip hop album in 2006, Plan B decided to go back to his first musical love: soul. „She Said“ is his own personal plan B.

At the time of writing this article, „She Said“ hasn't been released in Germany, but it is such a good song, it is really worth listening to in the Net. It's a song about a fictional character called Strickland Banks, played in the video by Plan B. Like most soul songs, „She Said“ is about love and broken hearts. Above all, it's about all the things „she said“. For example, „she said, I love you more than words can say“, and „she said, boy, I loved you from the start“. But Strickland Banks says something completely different: „So I said, what you're saying, girl, it can't be right / How can you be in love with me? We only spent tonight / Stop this crazy talk, leave right now, close the door.“

Later in the song it becomes clear that Strickland Banks is in a courtroom, explaining the situation to a judge. It is at this point in the song that Plan B begins to rap: „I'm innocent, I protested / She just feels rejected / Had her heart broken by someone she's obsessed with.“ This mix of soul and rap, as well as the way Plan B tells a story like in a Hollywood movie, makes „She Said“ a very special song. No doubt it will soon be playing on radios all across Germany. If so, then just remember: You heard it here first!
