There have been many brave men and women in the history of the world. People who have stood up for what they believe in. People who have fought for their rights and the rights of others. People who have changed the world through their struggle. Nelson Mandela in South Africa, Martin Luther King in the USA, Mahatma Gandhi in India, women all over the world who wanted the same rights as men. Not to mention the founders of the world’s great religions like Christ, Muhammad and Buddha. What would the world be like today if those people hadn’t spoken up? If they hadn’t made their voices be heard?
The new song by the British singer, Emeli Sandé, could be about one of these famous men or women. Or it could be a song about you or me. We all have moments in our lives when we don’t speak up, when we don’t let our voices be heard. Moments when we should. That’s something that the 25-year-old singer from Scotland doesn’t want to do.
“You’ve got the words to change a nation / but you’re biting your tongue / You’ve spent a lifetime stuck in silence / afraid you’ll say something wrong / If no one ever hears it / how are we gonna learn your song? / I wanna sing, I wanna shout / I wanna scream till the words dry out / So put it in all of the papers / I’m not afraid / They can read all about it ...“
As a little girl, Emeli Sandé was very shy. „I could hardly talk to adults or make a sound in public,“ she once said in an interview. But when she played music, she became another person, composing and performing her own songs from a very young age. After finishing secondary school, she started studying medicine at a university in Scotland, but soon music - her first love - took over and she went to London where she began to work as a songwriter. „It’s like a dream come true,“ she says now. „But music is like fast food. You’re in, then out.“ With a voice like hers - and lyrics to match - hopefully Emeli Sandé will stay ’in’ for a long time. (Die Lyric Lane zum Hören: www.faz.net/lyriclane)
