Every year on the 31st of December at midnight, the New Year begins with fireworks. Some cities like Sydney, London and Rio de Janeiro put on the most amazing firework displays, as rockets shoot through the air and are reflected in the water below. Other people buy fireworks in their local shop and go out onto the street to make their own firework display. Wherever you are, it's loud, it's fun, and the dark night sky is lit up for a few sparkling minutes.

Katy Perry's song „Firework“ has been in the German charts since November last year and was probably played at a lot of New Year's Eve parties this year. Although it is a positive song with a feel-good message, the song starts on a sad note. Katy asks, „Do you ever feel like a plastic bag / drifting through the wind / wanting to start again? / Do you ever feel so paper thin / like a house of cards / one blow from caving in?“ The answer is „yes“. At some point, everybody feels bad. It's part of life. It can be because of an argument with a friend, or a difficult situation at home, or even come from problems at school. Everybody knows it. Everybody feels down some time.

But as the beat begins to pick up in the song, so too does Katy's message. „Do you know there's still a chance for you / cause there's a spark in you? / You don't have to feel like a waste of space / You're original, cannot be replaced.“ She calls out to everyone to „ignite the light / and let it shine / Cause, baby, you're a firework / come on, show them what you're worth / make 'em go - Oh, oh, oh! / As you shoot across the sky-y-y.“

In the music video to the song, the fireworks literally explode out of Katy Perry's heart. The song's message is a good one: everyone is special; you should never give up; hold on to the light. At the moment, Katy Perry's firework is shining brighter than ever.
